What is C.E.M. ?

Contagious Equine Metritis (C.E.M.) is an equine sexually transmitted disease. Stallions do not exhibit symptoms and are thus carriers who may infect mares during breeding. Infected mares often show a discharge within 10 to 14 days of breeding. Infection can result in the mares aborting the fetus, producing an infected foal, and even in eventually becoming infertile.

Mares and stallions more than 2 years of age (731 days) must proceed to C.E.M. quarantine after the standard quarantine. At an approved facility, mares and stallions can be effectively tested and treated. Quarantine at the C.E.M. facility must last at least 14 days.

Rivana Farm is a USDA approved C.E.M. treatment facility for imported stallions and mares. 800 acres of gently rolling pastures located 10 minutes from Charlottesvilles Virginia on road 20 in the earth horse country.
